The brand task
Velvet is the hardest fabric to sell with a photograph: it changes colour with the light and the angle, and a sofa is a large purchase. Every fabric needs its own shoot. The brand wants a page where the visitor walks around one sofa, sees how the pile catches light and picks a fabric.
Where a brand would use this
- Product pages
- A sofa the visitor can turn, with the fabrics as a switch instead of a grid of swatches and photos.
- Fabric configurators
- The same model in every fabric of the collection, one model and a table of materials.
- Showrooms and events
- A screen in the store that shows the whole range in the customer’s fabric.
- Designer and architect presentations
- The piece placed in a project render with the chosen fabric.
What the solution consists of
- A ready PBR sofa model (see credits) with five fabric materials, prepared for the web: about 2,000 vertices of fabric, WebP textures, meshopt compression, 0.6 MB.
- Velvet is built from a dark base colour, a coloured sheen layer and a fine normal map; the sheen colours are what make each fabric change with the light.
- Web scene in Three.js: scroll chapters with directed camera shots, drag to turn, a close-up mode, a soft contact shadow and a key light with a soft shadow, a lighter model for phones and a no-3D mode.
What we need from a furniture brand
- 3D files or CAD of the pieces, or drawings with dimensions
- Fabric and finish swatches, with names and references
- Photos of the product for checking proportions
- Product links, sizes and options
Limits of this demo
- Velvet Curve 220 is a concept presentation of a ready sample model, not a client product. For a brand the piece is modelled or scanned from its own drawings and fabric samples.
- The sofa is a free, publicly available model, so this case shows the presentation, not an exclusive design.
- Fabric colours on screen are approximate; real fabrics are matched from swatches.
